Built in the 17th Century on the White Elster river, Schloss Moritzburg in Zeitz, Saxony-Anhalt was a royal palace and fortified seat of a bishop, which also includes a magnificent cathedral. Today the baroque castle, surrounded by a beautiful garden and park, is home to a museum, the Lutheriden Library (descendants of the female line of Martin Luther), a one of a kind museum dedicated to the history of the baby carriage and a permanent exhibit of fairy tale illustrations by Johannes Lebeck.

The charming, almost 600 year old half timbered house is the perfect backdrop for the valuable collection of over 250 authentic musical instruments and household objects on display. In the music room the exhibits of spinetts and organs is regularly used for concerts and demonstrations during visits. We were even asked to participate in a few exerpts of well known pieces. This was quite hilarious..

At the age of 10, after the ealy death of both parents, his older, equally musical brother Johann Christoph Bach took over the younger Bach's guardianship and they left Eisenach for Arnstadt. It is here that his musical studies intensified and he became exposed to the influence of music by Johann Pachelbel under whom his brother had studied.

At 14 he was awarded a choral scholarship at St. Michael's School in Lüneburg. It was already more than evident, that he was an extremely talented young man. So it is not surprising that he wrote some of his most significant compositions for the organ at the age of 20.
In 1707, after an argument with his employer he took advantage of the opportunity to leave his position in Arnstadt and became the Organist of the St.-Blasius-Church in Mühlhausen. That same year he married his cousin Maria Barbara, which was not unusual for that time.
Just a year later the 23 year old Bach became the Court Organist and Chamber Musician for the Duke of Weimar. His first of 7 children were born and he quickly rose to Concert Master. Knowledge of his talent for organ music spread across Germany.Baroque String Instruments
1717 he rose to Court Conductor for Duke Leopold of Anhalt-Köthen. Shortly after their arrival in Köthen, his young wife died. In 1720 he married the musician daughter Anna Magdalena Wilcke. He composed the well known Brandenburg Concertos in 1723.
